If you get into an accident in Massachusetts, no fault insurance can pay for medical expenses, loss of income and other miscellaneous expenses regardless of who’s at fault for the accident. Here’s what you need to know about no fault insurance in Massachusetts, how claims work and what is covered.

What is “No Fault”?

In a no fault state, you’re required to carry personal medical coverage as part of your insurance policy. This provides medical coverage for you and your passengers if there’s an accident, no matter who was at fault. This can also be referred to as “no fault coverage”.

Is Massachusetts a no fault state?

Massachusetts is one of twelve states in the US with no fault insurance laws. This is why MA is known as a “no fault state”.

In a no fault state like Massachusetts, you’re required to carry Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, on insurance policy. This provides medical coverage for you and your passengers if there’s an accident, no matter who was at fault. PIP can also be referred to as No Fault coverage.

In Massachusetts, you must have $8,000 of PIP coverage and you cannot purchase more. Instead, you can purchase optional medical payments coverage, also known as MedPay. This pays for necessary medical and funeral expenses after PIP coverage is exhausted. MedPay not only covers you and your passengers, but also your household family members.

Required CoverageMinimum Limit
Bodily Injury Liability$20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability$5,000 per accident
Personal Injury Protection$8,000 per accident
Uninsured Motorists$20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident

If you get into an accident, your medical benefits coverage will help pay your injuries and medical expenses. Your liability coverages will help protect you if you are responsible for injuries to others or damage to their vehicles.
