Massachusetts state requirements
If you own a vehicle in Massachusetts, you’re legally required to have auto insurance for it. You’re required to carry these coverages at the following limits:
Required Coverage | Minimum Limits |
Bodily Injury Liability | $20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident |
Property Damage Liability | $5,000 per accident |
Personal Injury Protection | $8,000 per accident |
Uninsured Motorist | $20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident |
Bodily injury liability coverage
This protects you if you’re held responsible for injuring someone in a car accident. This coverage can help pay for the injured party’s medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. It may also help pay your expenses in a related lawsuit. You need at least $20,000 of coverage per person and $40,000 per accident in MA.
Property damage liability coverage
This protects you if you are held responsible for damaging someone else’s property in a car accident. This coverage helps reimburse another person for their damaged property (such as a car, a street light or a building). It also helps pay your expenses in the event of a related lawsuit. There’s a minimum limit of $5,000 per accident for MA insurance policies.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Massachusetts is a no-fault state, which means your PIP coverage pays for you and your passengers for medical expenses and lost wages resulting from an accident, regardless of who caused the crash. In MA, your PIP limit is $8,000.
This is different from liability coverage, which covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to another driver or their passengers when you’re at fault.
Uninsured motorist coverage (UM)
This coverage helps pay medical costs and other related expenses when you or one of your passengers is injured in an accident by a driver who doesn’t have insurance coverage. UM also covers unidentified drivers, as in the case of hit-and-run accidents. You’re required to have limits of at least $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident in Massachusetts. This coverage does not help pay for physical damage to your car, but your optional collision coverage will if you have it.
Recommended insurance coverage in MA
When you come to Plymouth Rock for your car insurance needs in MA, you’ll have some additional coverages to choose from. While not required, these recommended coverages offer more protection for you and your vehicle. Here are just a few of the optional coverages our customers in Massachusetts purchase:
Collision coverage helps pay to repair or replace your car after a collision with another vehicle or stationary object. Collision only covers damage to your car or someone else’s car that you are using with permission.
Comprehensive coverage helps pay for damage to your car in situations NOT related to a collision. This includes natural disasters, theft, fire, vandalism, damage caused by hitting an animal and more.
Underinsured motorist coverage is similar to uninsured motorist coverage, but instead helps pay for medical expenses caused by an at-fault driver that is underinsured. An underinsured driver has insurance, but not enough to pay for injuries they cause.
Medical payments coverage, known as MedPay, helps pay for medical expenses from an accident. If you choose to buy MedPay, the minimum coverage limit is $5,000. You can buy more.
